UPDATE 05/07 3:52 p.m. -- The human remains found in Jefferson County recently have been identified as those of Kelly Dwyer, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department tells TODAY'S TMJ4.
Dwyer went missing in October of 2013. A 6:15 p.m. news conference has been planned with more information.
The Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement that a forensic odontologist made the identification, but a cause of death has not been determined pending further investigation.
ORIGINAL STORY: JEFFERSON COUNTY -- We have learned that the body found in Jefferson County is a woman. Now investigators will go through dental records and DNA to see if there is a match with any missing people in the area.
"We keep going and getting the best indicators by characterizing the skeleton," said Dr. Fred Anapol.
Anapol is the head of the anthropology department at UWM, and is best known for his work on the John Wayne Gacy case.
"We identified 29 bodies," Anapol explained.
Anapol says one of the first things investigators will do is determine sex. In this case, they know the body is a woman.
"Once you've identified the sex, you've eliminated half the population."
He says after that, hey get as much information from teeth as possible.
"Your dental work like fillings and stuff like that are like finger prints," Anapol said.
We know the Milwaukee County Medical Examiners office has asked for the latest dental records for missing Milwaukee woman Kelly Dwyer. Anapol adds, it doesn't work like crime scene TV shows. This case won't be solved in a matter of hours.
"It takes some time," Anapol said.
