MILWAUKEE (WISN) —It could be a tragic misunderstanding that led to Milwaukee's homicide.
Micheal Powell, 18, was shot to death inside a stranger's home Tuesday afternoon. His family is convinced his mental illness played a role.
Neighbors said they heard five shots inside a duplex about 1:45 p.m. near 28th and Melvina streets. Police found a man shot to death.
“This is like, my little brother, the closest thing to me,” the victim’s brother, Antione Powell, said.
Antione Powell told WISN 12 News that he’s noticed his brother's odd behavior and confusion in recent weeks.
“He had a problem where he couldn't, he didn't probably know where he was. He thought he was home, and he walked in, and I don't see why you would shoot somebody for walking in. You could've just said, ‘Turn around, get out of my house,’ at least,” Antoine Powell said.
An aunt told WISN 12 News reporter Nick Bohr that Micheal Powell walked-in to another stranger's house last week, but that time no one was hurt. Another aunt said they're all stunned.
“The only thing we can do is just support each other and be here for each other right now because this is really a tragedy right here,” the victim’s aunt, Ebony Martin said.
Police said they arrested several men in the house in connection with the shooting but are still trying to sort things out.
Relatives said they were trying to get Micheal Powell psychiatric help, but he was resistant. Since he was 18, they said they couldn't force him.
