La Crosse police confirmed emergency crews recovered a body from the Mississippi River Friday morning.

Crews received a call at about 8 a.m. from a person near the Riverside Center complex who thought there was a body floating in the water.

The body of a man was recovered near the Division Street boat landing, near Division and Front Streets. Police Sergeant Randy Rank told News 8 the body appeared to have been in the water for quite some time.

Police have not released the identity of the individual.

Sgt. Rank said there is a person who has been missing and police are working with Winona County to identify the victim.

"The La Crosse County medical examiner has taken the body, so the La Crosse Police Department along with the medical examiner will begin an investigation in regards to this with an autopsy scheduled as early as Monday," Sgt. Rank said.  "Hopefully in that time we can make a positive identification on the body that we have recovered."

It's too early in the investigation to know whether there was any indication of foul play, Sgt. Rank told News 8.
