Updated: Teen kills woman then shoots himself

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) – A teenage boy fatally shot a 47-year-old woman before shooting himself with the shotgun at a rural Wisconsin Rapids home, the Wood County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday.

The shooting that killed Theresa Coates happened about 10 p.m. Monday at 6010 Church Ave. in the Town of Saratoga following a “brief disturbance,” Capt. Quentin Ellis said in a statement.

The shooter, Miguel-Angel Oertel, 17, was hospitalized Wednesday in critical but stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Ellis said.

Deputies were called to the home by a 17-year-old girl who reported two people had been shot, Ellis said.

Ellis said the motive for the shootings is unclear but the three in the home the night of the tragedy have a ”history of relationship between them.” He declined to elaborate.

No other details were immediately released.
