UPDATE: Homicide at Columbia Correctional Institution
The name of the inmate that died at Columbia Correctional Institution on February 12, 2015 has been identified as follows:

JEROME A. SCOTT, age 40

An autopsy was conducted on February 13, 2015 at the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause of death has been determined to be by ligature strangulation. The manner of death has been determined to be homicide.

A second inmate, age 42, that was involved in the homicide has been identified. This inmate has cooperated with Sheriff’s Office investigators and has provided information that is consistent with the cause and manner of death. The inmate’s identity will not be released until a criminal complaint has been filed by the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office. Due to the complexity and depth of this investigation it is not anticipated that the inmate will be formally charged until the week of February 23, 2015.

The victim inmate and the suspect inmate were both from the Milwaukee area. The involved inmates were both incarcerated for previous homicide related convictions. This homicide occurred in a cell that the two inmates shared. No correctional staff members were involved or injured in the homicide.

The homicide investigation remains under investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Columbia County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Department of Corrections.
