A Superior man facing a murder charge is now being charged for his alleged involvement in an attack on a fellow jail inmate

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- A Superior man facing a murder charge is now being charged for his alleged involvement in an attack on a fellow jail inmate.

Chance William Andrews, 18, in custody at the Douglas County Jail, made an initial appearance in Douglas County Circuit Court on a charge of felony battery by prisoners stemming from a Jan. 30 incident.

Andrews and another prisoner, Michael Robert Simone, 30, of Duluth, attacked a fellow inmate the morning of Jan. 30 as an officer was distributing medication in their cell block, according to the criminal complaint. Simone retrieved a dust mop handle that had been hidden in the first floor shower, ran up to the inmate and began beating him over the head and back, said the complaint. Andrews allegedly ran up to the inmate at the same time and threw several punches when the dust mop handle shattered.

Andrews is accused of fatally shooting Superior resident Garth Velin on Sept. 30 during a botched robbery attempt. He faces one charge of felony murder and remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 cash bail.
