Police said someone fired 13 rounds into a house. One of those rounds hit the girl who was playing on a couch in the living room.
Micky Govani said his granddaughter, Leillani, was struck in the leg.
"She's a trooper," he said. "She's a pretty young, strong lady."
She is expected to recover, but Govani said there were three others in the room at the time of the shooting.
"Grandmother was there with the (one-year-old) grandbaby on the other side," he said. "She heard the shots, then she heard the baby cry."
Family members then discovered the girl had been hit in the leg. Police do not have any suspects in custody, and family members have no idea why their house was fired at.
"There's just so much disappointment," he said. "What is this society coming to? It's just ridiculous. It doesn't make sense to me at all."
