Man found dead in Tomah hotel - HOMICIDE

TOMAH, Wis. (WKBT) - UPDATED

A 43-year-old man found dead Wednesday in a Tomah hotel room was the victim of a homicide, according to the preliminary autopsy report.

Tomah police responded to a medical call at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Econo Lodge Hotel and found an unidentified man dead in a room.

On Friday, Tomah police released the name of the victim as Derek Magnuson.

The cause of death, although not known, appeared suspicious and not of natural causes. An autopsy was completed in Madison on Thursday, which found Magnuson was the victim of a homicide.

No other details surrounding Magnuson’s death have been released.

Tomah police said there appears to be no additional threat to the community relating to this case.

The Monroe County Joint Investigative Task Force and the Wisconsin Department of Justice-Crime Lab are assisting Tomah police with this investigation.

An unidentified white man was found dead in a Tomah hotel early Wednesday morning.

Tomah police responded to a medical call at about 7:30 a.m. at a hotel on the north end of the City and found a man dead in a room.

The man is described as a white male who is about 30-40 years-old. Tomah police said the cause of death is not known at this time. An autopsy has been ordered by the Monroe County Coroner.

“The initial investigation has yielded minimal information for release,” Tomah police stated.

Members of the Monroe County Joint Task Force are conducting the investigation with help from the Wisconsin Department of Justice-Mobile Crime Lab Unit. The Monroe County Communication Center, Tomah Area Ambulance Service, and the Monroe County Sheriff Reserve also assisted in this investigation.
