Man accused of shooting Wauwatosa detective charged with armed robbery
MILWAUKEE —The man accused of shooting a Wauwatosa police detective has been charged with armed robbery.
Najee Harmon, 19, is in custody as prosecutors review the shooting case, but Monday he was charged with robbing a woman at gunpoint last week.
“He's a good friend of ours. I'm not going to throw him down. I'm not going to throw him to the wolves,” said Stephanie King, who added she's known Harmon since he was little. He's friends with her kids, she said.
Police found Harmon hiding out at her house Saturday morning after an all-night manhunt. Police said he shot an officer investigating a burglary.
King said she saw his picture on television.
“I seen him that morning,” King said.
“And did you say you better get out of here?” WISN 12 News reporter Colleen Henry asked.
“No, I did not,” King said.
“And they didn't arrest you or anything for harboring a fugitive?” Henry asked.
“No, cause I ain't harboring no fugitive,” King said.
Friday wasn't Harmon's first run-in with the law. He has two prior felony convictions.
According to court documents, in 2011, he and some other guys punched out a Rufus King student at a bus stop, knocked him unconscious and stole his cellphone. In 2012, at a northside restaurant, he and another group of guys beat up a man and stole his headphones.
WISN 12 News has learned prosecutors said that days before the police shooting, Harmon put a gun to a woman's head and stole her wallet. King defended him.
“Cause to me, he didn't do no wrong. He just shot a cop and then everybody come around when they shoot the cop, but when the cops shoot people do they come around?” King said.
As a convicted felon, it's a crime for Harmon to even have a gun.
The police detective continues to improve but is still hospitalized.
