Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - A Chippewa County Sheriff's Deputy who was stabbed while on duty is back at work.
Investigator William Gray was attacked last year by Sharringer Singh Garcha, who is from the United Kingdom. Gray was helping in the search for a missing 17-year-old girl.
Garcha attacked Gray inside his squad car, stabbing him fourteen times before Gray shot and killed him. On Friday Gray told News 18 he's happy to be back at work but healing will be an on-going process.
"The nerves that were severed and the muscles that were severed can take 1-3 years before all that stuff can come back,” Gray said. “The hardest part is mentally trying to get over being attacked as I was. Now I have a greater appreciation for people who have been attacked.”
Gray says he's being eased back into duty and will be taking it easy as he continues his recovery.
”Being attacked as I was has left some reservations about being seated in a small vehicle next to somebody."
He hopes that other law enforcement can learn from what he went through. He says to always be alert and never become complacent.
