Caseworker says Burmese immigrant shot in fatal robbery

MILWAUKEE - A report says a Milwaukee man was helping prepare a traditional Burmese breakfast for a guest when his 11-year-old son walked into the room — with a stranger holding a gun against the boy's neck.

While trying to protect his son, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports, Jay Ro was shot dead by the suspected armed robber. The account of Thursday's ordeal comes from the family's caseworker with Catholic Charities, Steven Xiong.

The caseworker has been working with Ro and his family since 2011, when the Burmese family arrived in Milwaukee from a Thai refugee camp.

The Milwaukee Police Department said in a statement Friday that it's continuing its investigation and the search for suspects and a motive. Lt. Mark Stanmeyer says they have no further details to disclose.
