Beloit man gets 30 years for running over ex-girlfriend

BELOIT, Wis. (AP) -- A 42-year-old Beloit man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for running over and killing his ex-girlfriend in her driveway last year.

Christopher Rutherford pleaded guilty in August to first-degree reckless homicide in the death of 47-year-old Sheila Rosenbaum in May of 2014.

Prosecutors say he got into her van and began revving the engine while she blocked his way. Officers arrived and tried to use a stun gun on Rutherford, but he sped out of the driveway, running over Rosenbaum. Officers fired shots, wounding Rutherford, who later crashed and spent about a month in the hospital.

His sentencing Thursday, Rutherford said he was sorry and didn't mean to do it, but that he takes responsibility for his actions.
