Sauk County shooting victim in critical condition after shooting on interstate

MADISON, Wis. - A woman from Sauk County is in critical condition, following a drive-by shooting on Interstate 94, according to a report from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. She was initially transported by EMS to St. Clare Hospital, and then sent to UW Hospital via Med Flight.

The shooting on the interstate in Sauk County Sunday afternoon is connected to a homicide in West Allis, according to a release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

The DOJ said West Allis police were called early Sunday morning for a report of a man forcibly entering two apartments. Police said they found a man with a gunshot wound who later died.

Police determined that a person of interest in the shooting was at Epikos Church on West Greenfield Avenue and that the person had made threatening statements regarding a member of the church.  Police responded to the church and no one was injured.

Numerous law enforcement agencies were later involved in a vehicle pursuit on eastbound I-94 in Columbia and Dane counties. At approximately 3:20 p.m., as the vehicle entered Dane County, road spikes were deployed and the vehicle was disabled.

In a report, police identified the suspect as a 20-year-old male from West Allis. Police said the suspect eventually exited the vehicle and began to move towards law enforcement with a hand gun. Two Columbia County Deputies shot the male suspect after he continued to advance toward officers, despite verbal commands to stop, according to the report. The suspect was transported to UW-Hospital via Med Flight, where his condition has not been updated.

Two male passengers were also inside the suspect vehicle, ages 30 and 34, according to police. They were not injured in the incident, but one passenger was transported to Meriter Hospital as a precaution. He was treated and released. Both passengers are now in custody of the Dane County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said the suspect involved in the Sauk County drive-by shooting is the person responsible for the homicide that occurred Sunday morning in West Allis.

All lanes of the interstate near DeForest were closed because of the incident, according to a Department of Transportation release.

Investigators with the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation are assisting the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol and the West Allis Police Department assess the facts and process the scene at this time.
