Man assaults wife with hammer in cottage Grove

COTTAGE GROVE, Wis. - A man threatened to kill himself after allegedly assaulting his wife with a hammer in the Village of Cottage Grove Monday morning, according to a release.

Police were called to the 200 block of Chateau Drive around 6:45 a.m. Monday.

The woman, who had head injuries, told police her husband had assaulted her with a hammer, and he was still inside the residence when police arrived, according to the release.

Officers found the man in the basement bathroom with a knife, police said. He had self-inflicted neck wounds and was bleeding profusely. He was taken to UW Hospital by Med Flight.

The woman was taken to a hospital by ambulance, according to the release.

Cottage Grove Police Chief Dan Layber confirmed there were two children inside the house at the time of attack, but could not confirm whether marital trouble caused the incident.

"I don't know the status of the relationship, but I can confirm we have been there before for other troubles," Layber said.

Layber said the man complied with police requests when they arrived. He was taken into custody without incident, and remains in custody while being treated for his injuries at the hospital.
